Great weekend for the New Plymouth training track picking up two of the feature races at the Wellington premier meeting on Saturday.

First up was Wellington Cup winner, Waisake, who returned to Trentham to add the $55,000 FastTrack St Leger to his winning list. The Allan Sharrock trained stayer was too strong for the field under the urgings of stable apprentice, Hazel Schofer. Schofer attracted widespread praise for her ride, not panicking when caught three-wide as she took Waisake forward, challenging on the turn to win by two and a half lengths. Fellow New Plymouth stayer, Beaudzwell, from the Wheeler stable ran third.

In the next race glamour mare, Coventina Bay, held on to win the $70,000 Group III Wentworth Grange Cuddle Stakes for local trainer Rob Patterson. She now heads to Te Aroha for her biggest test in the Group I Breeders Stakes on Saturday 10th April. Coventina Bay has now won eight of her thirteen starts and bankrolled $173,700, she is one of the best mares racing in New Zealand at present.
