Fashion at the Races: A Legacy of Style and Elegance
Fashion has long been woven into the fabric of race day traditions, creating an atmosphere of elegance, sophistication, and celebration. Few social events offer the opportunity for individuals to express their unique style and flair in the way that a race day does. At Taranaki Racing, we are proud to continue this long-standing tradition by hosting our Fashion at the Races event on Friday, 14th February 2025, as part of our much-anticipated Valentine’s Race Day. This exciting event also serves as a qualifying competition for the renowned Ned Prix de Fashion at Ellerslie Champions Day on Saturday, 8th March 2025.
Fashion competitions at the races are not just about clothing—they symbolize the fusion of sport and high culture, offering a stage for creativity, innovation, and prestige. Race day fashion has a rich history of elevating the social aspect of racing, attracting style enthusiasts and showcasing the best in design and presentation. Taranaki Racing is thrilled to carry on this legacy and looks forward to welcoming contestants and spectators alike for a day of racing and refinement.

WHAT ARE THE JUDGES LOOKING FOR??
Race day fashion is an opportunity to showcase stylish, elegant, and polished looks while embracing current runway trends. Our judges will be looking for well-coordinated, fashion-forward outfits that reflect individuality and flair.
Here’s what our judges will focus on:
-
Coordination:
- Every aspect of the outfit should be thoughtfully coordinated, from head to toe. This includes hats, jewelry, bags, makeup, and nails.
- Attention to small details is key, as these elements create a cohesive and complete look.
-
Style and Originality:
- The outfit should demonstrate an understanding and interpretation of current fashion trends, while remaining appropriate for race day.
- Racewear should incorporate seasonal silhouettes and color palettes, reflecting a modern yet wearable style.
- It’s important that the outfit flatters the wearer, suits the occasion, and is appropriate for their age.
-
Attention to Detail:
- Every element counts: shoes should be in perfect condition, hair neatly styled, and nails well-groomed.
- The overall presentation, including hair, makeup, and grooming, should be flawless.
-
Innovation:
- Judges will value originality and personal style, looking for outfits that bring something fresh and unique to the competition.
-
Poise:
- Grace, grooming, and deportment will play a significant role. A polished, confident demeanor can elevate the entire look.
-
A Nod to Racing Traditions:
- Remember, racewear is daywear, not evening attire. Outfits should respect the heritage and traditions of racing fashion.
By keeping these guidelines in mind, participants can showcase their creativity while adhering to the timeless elegance of race day style.
